Here I am in the young hours of 2016, sitting down to write my first blog post of the year. I’m probably right along with thousands of others, resolving to make this “the year” or “start the year out on the right foot.” How many actually follow through? I’ve seen figures all over the map, but some as low as 8%.
So instead of sitting here and making a list of resolutions (or even one), I’m going to pass. I’ve never really been into the tradition and it seems a bit glossy to me personally.
I am however, onboard with goal setting. What’s the difference? Goal setting is a way to set measured targets for yourself and to track your progress. Resolutions tend to be more vague. For example: Resolution: I am going to post on my blog more in 2016. Goal: I am going to post on my blog once a week in 2016.
So what are my goals for 2016? I’ll start with one: Spend at least 20 minutes each day with my daughter without a handheld device in reach. It doesn’t mean that I’m not already doing that. There are days when I am great at this, but I’m not as intentional about it as I should be. Yes, this means I might miss out on an adorable photo op, but if I am present in the moment I’m creating a memory that no picture can truly capture. Yes, it means I may have to dig out a CD for my daughter to dance along with instead of my phone, but that extra few minutes will be worth it.
Curious as to the goals of my readers. What do you want to achieve in 2016?
I also decided to add a new segment. I’ll include a short feature on one of my daughter’s current favorite reads. Full disclosure: These will be picked on the preferences of a 23 month old and are not promoted in any way. Some may be readily commercially available. Others are lesser known. Just us sharing family favorites with others.
Book of the Week: January 1, 2016
Not a Box: Antoinette Portis
This cute picture book explores every child’s favorite present: a box and the various things it can be. My daughter loves exploring the pictures and sounds associated with the creations (and yes, she loves playing in boxes too). This has been a staple in our story time collection since she was 6 months old.
Love this book! (I think you should be prepared to hear this response for most of the early childhood books you plan to share 🙂
